I came across this mook (magazine x book) in the newsagents today. It had the most beautiful cover and just felt right when I picked it up, beautiful design and stories, lovely paper and printing. I also loved the term “mook”

“FIVE INDIVIDUALS TELL YOU THEIR STORIES

Their backgrounds and dreams are as unique as they are. What unites them is their creativity, passion and integrity. Somewhere they found the courage to fly.”

The website is http://www.dumbofeather.com – there is an interactive sample of the magazine published at issu.com http://issuu.com/dumbofeather/docs/df14_sample_pages very cool

I settled in with a cup of tea and some chocolate and read two stories – and then couldn’t resist looking up the online version.

This mook has great appeal and integrity – I love it!

The papers developed for this conference to spark thought are excellent and worth a read and can be downloaded from http://wp.nmc.org/future/

From the website:

The 2009 NMC Symposium for the Future is will take place October 27-29, 2009, and is the fourteenth in the NMC’s Series of Virtual Symposia. During this symposium they will explore actual and potential applications of technology that could impact issues of global importance over the next five years and beyond.

Technologies and practices that are just beginning to show promise in an educational or social context may well be commonplace in that time frame. The applicability of technology — whether established or emerging — to the social, environmental, and educational challenges we face today is the central theme of the Symposium. Projects that test the applicability of new ideas, research into new solutions for global problems, and demonstrations of cutting-edge tools are all part of this exploration of the future.

Feedly is a firefox extension which weaves twitter and Google Reader into a magazine like experience. Paired with delicious to bookmark the content I like – it has revolutionised my information management for web resources. It is really easy to select what you want to include in your Feedly and then to scan through to select particular articles to read further. Once you find something you like it is straight forward to share it through Delicious, Twitter, email, facebook etc. by clicking a button.

I also found http://www.fivefilters.org/pdf-newspaper/ which makes it easy to combine blog posts into a newsletter.

My aim is to use the two applications to collate, comment and share information online with colleagues..making my blogging easier and saving the extra effort of a separate newsletter.
